| In 1521, in his search
for the Spice Islands, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan stumbled
upon the island of Cebu which he found hospitable and rich in natural resources.
He decided to make the island his base for exploration, Christianization
and conquest. On April 14, 1521 - for the first time in the Philippines
- a Catholic mass was celebrated. The highlight of the occasion was the
conversion and baptism of Rajah Humabon (a local chieftain), his wife Queen
Juana, their children and some 800 islanders. Magellan's days of exploration and conquest were short-lived, however, as he was slain in battle by Lapu-lapu (another local chieftain) in the neighboring island of Mactan. |
